Minimoog Model D — Foundations
Level 1 — Analog Synthesis Fundamentals
From first contact to production-ready recording. Twelve sessions covering the complete Minimoog signal path — oscillators, mixer, filter, amplifier — the classic bass and lead patches with exact parameter settings, MIDI integration, gain staging, and parallel MIDI-and-audio recording workflow. By Session 12, you program any standard Minimoog patch from memory and record it at professional standards.
The Minimoog from first power-on to production-ready patch programming.
Twelve sessions cover: the neutral panel state and physical orientation; the complete signal path (oscillators through mixer through filter through amplifier); all six oscillator waveforms and the footage range system; mixer input saturation and the feedback loop; the Moog Ladder Filter with Cutoff, Emphasis, Amount of Contour, and Keyboard Control; Filter and Loudness Contour generators; glide and expressive phrasing; the classic Minimoog bass patch with complete parameter settings; the classic lead patch with mod wheel vibrato; LFO from the dedicated LFO and Oscillator 3; MIDI integration and gain staging; and a Level 1 completion project.
By Session 12 you can program the classic bass and lead patches from memory in under 90 seconds each, record both at correct gain staging with MIDI and audio in parallel, and deliver a production-ready session with documented patches.
The foundation that all Minimoog production work builds on.
Level 1 is designed for producers who own or have access to a Minimoog Model D and want to use it professionally — not explore it casually. The sessions are structured as a playing curriculum, not a reading one. Every session ends with a recorded deliverable that can go into a real production.
Completing Level 1 unlocks Level 2 Creative Control, which covers FM modulation, feedback distortion, filter self-oscillation as percussion, pad design, CV integration, and hybrid production workflow — the non-obvious techniques that separate Minimoog producers from Minimoog owners.
12 Sessions — Minimoog Model D Foundations
Session 1
First Contact — setup, physical orientation, neutral panel state, and the filter sweep exercise that establishes ears-on contact with the instrument's most important control.
Session 2
The Signal Path — oscillators, mixer, filter, amplifier. The role of each stage and the mixer input saturation principle behind the classic Minimoog thickness.
Session 3
Oscillator Fundamentals — all six waveforms, the footage range system, detuning for warmth versus intervals. Five oscillator combinations built from scratch.
Session 4
The Mixer — input saturation levels, the feedback loop across its operational range, and external audio processing through the Moog filter via Aux In.
Session 5
The Moog Ladder Filter — Cutoff, Emphasis, Amount of Contour, and Keyboard Control. Filter self-oscillation as a sine wave source. The plucky filter patch.
Session 6
Contour Generators — ADSR theory applied to the Minimoog. Three envelope archetypes: plucky bass, sustained lead, slow pad. Programmed from scratch.
Session 7
Glide — rates by production context, the legato technique for selective glide, and recording a phrase with glide applied on specific transitions.
Session 8
The Classic Minimoog Bass — complete parameter settings, the function of each element, two variations, and A/B comparison of the feedback loop on and off.
Session 9
Lead Sounds — sawtooth plus square combination, Emphasis for mix cut, mod wheel vibrato setup, and recording a four-bar lead with vibrato on sustained notes.
Session 10
The LFO — dedicated LFO versus Oscillator 3 as LFO. Triangle and square wave modulation applied to pitch and filter. Noise as a modulation source.
Session 11
MIDI Integration and Recording Standards — complete MIDI-to-audio workflow, correct gain staging, parallel recording protocol, and CC1 automation.
Session 12
Foundations Review — Level 1 completion project: production-ready bass and lead for a real project, documented patches, clean audio and MIDI.
