Academy / Reason 14 Ladder / Level 1

Reason 14: Foundations

Reason is the only major DAW built as a virtual studio rack you can physically rewire — and version 14, released May 2026, finally wrapped that rack in a track-centric workflow. Over 12 sessions you go from opening the program for the first time to exporting a correctly specified master and stem set: the rack and the Track Panel, the sequencer, drums, the instrument library, Players, CV routing, the new RV-9 Reverb Station, recording, mixing and delivery. No prior Reason experience required.

The Rack and the Track Panel

How devices, automatic routing and the back panel actually work — plus version 14’s Track Panel, per-track racks and floating rack window, so you stop jumping between views and start working.

Instruments and Drums

Europa, Thor, Grain, Subtractor, Malström, NN-XT and ID8, plus Kong, Redrum and Dr. Octo Rex — which instrument to reach for, why, and one signature technique each.

Mixing and Delivery

A nine-step mixing order on Reason’s console, the RV-9 across nine algorithms, and a properly specified master and stem export — the difference between a project file and a product.

What You’ll Cover

From first launch to a finished, delivered record in 12 sessions.

Sessions 1 to 4 establish the ground: what Reason is and what changed in version 14, audio and MIDI configuration, the rack and automatic routing, and the sequencer with Track Folders and the rebuilt piano roll. Sessions 5 to 8 build capability — drums across three different instruments, the synthesizer and sampler library, Players as writing tools, and the back of the rack where CV and gate live.

Sessions 9 to 12 finish records: effects and the new RV-9 Reverb Station, audio recording and sampling your own material, mixing on the console with a repeatable order of operations, and export, the Reason Rack plugin, and where Reason sits in the MWHQ production pipeline. You leave with a patch library, a project template, and a ninety-day plan with a release date attached.

Where This Level Fits

Level 1 is the foundation everything else builds on.

Level 2 — Creative Control & Workflow — assumes you can build a Combinator, patch a CV connection and mix without notes. It moves into your own instruments, deep sound design, modulation networks, professional vocal production, arrangement craft, in-house mastering and catalog economics.

This level is right for any producer coming to Reason for the first time, and for returning users who left before version 14. If your criticism of Reason was that the rack and the sequencer felt like two separate programs, this is the release that answers it — and this level teaches the new way, not the old one.

Learn the one DAW that shows you how audio actually works.

Press Tab and Reason spins the rack around: every cable, every input, every output, exposed and patchable. Level 1 gives you the fluency to use that — and the workflow to finish records with it. When you complete Level 1, Level 2 is where you start building instruments nobody else has.
